SCHS host annual Freshmen Fest

Stephens County High School welcomed incoming 9th graders to tour the school last week during Freshmen Fest.

According to Stephens County High School Assistant Principal for Curriculum and Instruction Jessica Simmons, Freshmen Fest was started several years ago to give incoming freshmen an opportunity to see first-hand the CTAE Pathways the school offers and to tour the school.

“Freshmen Fest is something that we started several years ago to give the 8th graders an opportunity to see all of the programs and classes and clubs that we offer. We want the students, as they prepare to make their schedules next year, to really know what it is that we offer,” she said.

Stephens County High School Principal Michael Kewon says Freshmen Fest is important for the incoming Freshmen to get familiar with the school.

“This is just a way for us to show our upcoming 9th graders and their parents what we offer here at Stephens County High School and we’re super excited for them to be here next year,” Kewon said.

Stephens County High School Phlebotomy student Jada Nesbitt says Freshmen Fest allowed the Phlebotomy class to showcase the Phlebotomy Pathway; but also, to practice sticks.

Stephen Wallace is a parent of one of the incoming freshmen. He says as a parent it’s a great opportunity for him and his child to see what options they have.

“It’s neat being back here, obviously, we graduated from here, so it’s neat being here. The Freshmen Fest helps acclimate them (the incoming 9th graders) for what to expect. On Monday, all the 8th graders came out to tour the school. With the tours and the Freshmen Fest really helps parents be at ease with what their kids are enrolling into. As parents, we’re able to make sure our kids are in classes they need to be in, rather than them just randomly picking classes,” Wallace said.

Cohen Whitmire is an incoming freshman. He says Freshmen Fest has given him a lot to consider.

“It’s been really good. I came in and, honestly, my first stop was in the football room. I’ve checked out all of the CTAE classes, and all of them are pretty interesting. I feel really good about my freshmen year. I feel like the Freshmen Fest has given me a lot of information and a heads up to what I will be doing and what I need to do,” Whitmire said.
