SCHS, Hart Co. Split Varsity Hoops Doubleheader

The Stephens County Lady Indian basketball team will return home this week to wrap up the regular season carrying a five-game winning streak.

Friday night in Hartwell, the Lady Indians jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in beating Hart County, 58-52, in non-region girls’ basketball.

Renajah Verdell led all scorers with 24 points, and Na Na Eades added 15 for the Lady Indians.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Taniya Alexander’s 22 points and Shakendra Grove’s 18 points. Abbygail McLane added 10 for Hart County.

With the win, the Lady Indians move to 18-5 overall on the season, while Hart County’s girls drop to 11-11.

In the boys’ game, it was Hart County taking the early lead and never looking back as they beat the Indians, 71-53.

Stephens County trailed by seven in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs pulled away in the second half for the win.

Shone Webb scored 18 points to lead Hart County, going 14 of 14 at the free throw line. Tahj Johnson chipped in 12 points for the Bulldogs, who are now 21-1 on the season.

Mucha Trimier and Tyrece Mackie each scored 12 points to lead the Indians.

The loss drops the Stephens County boys to 7-16 on the season.

Stephens County returns home to host Oconee County on Tuesday in a Region 8-AAAA showdown. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Air time Tuesday on WNEG and wnegradio.com is set for 5:45 p.m.
