By Ken Brady
In Stephens County High School (SCHS) varsity baseball, the Indians opened the season Monday night at Jefferson and lost to the Dragons, 7-2. The big inning for Jefferson was in the third when they scored 6 runs on 5 hits, after 2 outs. The Indians’ defense only gave up two other hits, one coming in the fourth, producing Jefferson’s final run.
Stephens County could only produce 4 hits. Branson Stowe’s single in the sixth inning drove in Duke Collins, who reached on a walk. An attempt to throw out Stowe at second base allowed Christian Hewitt to score on that same play, who reached on a single. The Indians’ other hits came on singles from Carmelo Renfroe in the third and Junior Waldrup in the fifth.
Starting pitcher Noah Strickland took the loss. Lane Presley pitched the final 3 1/3 innings, giving up only 1 run on 1 hit.
Jefferson improves to 1-0, while Stephens County is now 0-1.
The two teams will play again on Wednesday, but the game will be the Indians’ home opener at The Reservation. Game time is 5:55 p.m. with airtime on WNEG at 5:45 p.m.
