SCHS Baseball gets 8-6 Victory over Prince Avenue

By Phil Hobbs

Findley Ward drove in 4 runs and pitched a scoreless final 2 1/3 innings for the save to lead the Stephens County High School Indians Varsity Baseball Team to an 8-6 victory over Prince Avenue Christian Monday night in Bogart.

The Indians trailed 2-0 after 3 innings but took the lead in the top of the 4th inning when Noah Strickland walked, stole 2nd and 3rd, and scored on a throwing error to cut the lead to 2-1. The Indians would later take advantage of more poor defense from the Wolverines when Duke Collins’ ground ball turned into a 2-run throwing error.

The Wolverines tied the score in the bottom of the inning, but the Indians came back with 4 runs in the top of the 5th when Carmelo Renfroe was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Ward cleared the bases on a 3-run double to make the score 7-3.

Prince Avenue came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th to cut the lead to one, but the tying run was stranded at 3rd base when Ward started his relief with a strikeout.

Ward provided insurance in the top of the 7th with another RBI double and then got the final out with two men on to secure the win.

Strickland pitched 4 innings for the Indians to get the win.

Stephens County improved to 7-6 in Region 8-AA and 14-11 overall. Prince Avenue fell to 9-4 in the region and 13-13 overall.

The two teams will meet again at Stephens County on Thursday in the Indians’ final regular-season home game. Airtime is set for 5:45 p.m. with first pitch at 5:55 p.m. on WNEG.
