School News Updates

First, a reminder that all Stephens County schools are closed for students and employees today. 

In a notice sent to WNEG News yesterday evening at approximately 5 p.m. after conferring with school officials and School Board members throughout the day taking stock of the weather and road conditions in Stephens County, Stephens County School Superintendent announced the closure, stating, “We pray everyone is safe following Hurricane Helene. As the recovery continues, Stephens County still has many residents without power and roads that are impassable or closed. As a result, Stephens County Schools will be CLOSED for students and employees on Monday, September 30.Twelve-month employees can report to work if conditions allow.”

She also stated that the Stephens County Indians football game against Franklin County, originally scheduled for last Friday, and postponed twice due to the weather, will take place in Carnesville tonight with kickoff at 6:30. Two Fridays ago,  the Indians had an open date on their schedule, but the week before, the Indians lost to Oconee County, 35 to 10, to drop their record to 3 & 2. Franklin County lost their last matchup in a road game against West Hall, 27 to 13. The Lions also have a record of 3 & 2. This will be the first Region 8-AA game for both teams. Last year, Stephens County defeated Franklin County at The Reservation, 52 to 7.

Also, The ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. and SC Local Livestock Show at 6:30 p.m. will be held tomorrow as scheduled at the new Ferman Gregory Agriculture Center 

Also, due to scheduling conflicts as Stephens County Emergency Management Director Danielle Rhodes continues to direct the storm cleanup efforts in Stephens County, WNEG News’ recap of the storm’s impact on the local community, and information regarding recovery efforts and assistance programs available for those who suffered losses due to the storm, has been postponed from the originally scheduled broadcast this morning. Schedules permitting, WNEG News will bring you this story tomorrow.

WNEG News has repeatedly tried to contact officials with the Mountain Education Center regarding classes but has not received a reply. A post regarding merchandise for sale at the school’s Spirit Store was posted at 1 p.m. last Friday, but no information regarding schedules has been posted to their website or social media. 

Schools in Habersham county will remain closed today. 

Rabun County Schools will not be in session (in person nor virtual) for students and staff today, but all 12 month employees should report to work if conditions allow.

Banks County schools are scheduled to resume normal operation today.

Franklin County Schools will reopen for all students and staff today, September 30.  Buses will run as scheduled unless otherwise contacted by your driver. If conditions prevent your child from attending school, please contact your child’s teacher via email, Remind, or IC Messenger

Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School will resume a normal school schedule today. Most bus routes will operate as usual. The Highlands bus route is canceled Monday, due to a road closure. Please be in touch with your student’s division administrator regarding absences and travel plan changes. School absences due to the impacts of the weather event are excused. Let safety be your guide in determining returning to school.

All NGTC campuses will be open today and operating on a normal schedule. 

Southwestern Community College (SCC) will be closed the week of Sept. 30-Oct. 4.
