SCBC approve SCBOE recommended millage rate for 2020

The Stephens County Board of Commissioners approved the Stephens County Board of Education recommended millage rate during its Special Called Meeting on Friday.

According to County Administrator Phyllis Ayers, the Board of Education recommended the County set the millage rate at 16.67 mills for the maintenance and operation of the public schools of Stephens County.

In July the board of education voted to take the roll back rate of 16.67 mills, a reduction from the 2019 rate of 16.8 mills.

Stephens County School Superintendent Dr. Daniel Oldham says the reason for the roll back is because of property values increasing in Stephens County.

Chairman Rod Moore stressed that the Board of Education is not increasing property taxes for 2020.

“Let’s say that again, there’s no tax increase from the Board of Education,” he said.

The Commission approved the recommended millage rate for schools unanimously.
