Local business leader Rick Phillips was one of three area men who were presented the Distinguished Citizen Award by the Northeast Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

The presentations were made Thursday evening, March 14, at the annual American Values Dinner, hosted by the Northeast Georgia Council.

Some 200 people attended the event, held at the Swanson Center at Piedmont College. Former UGA and NFL quarterback Eric Zeier was guest speaker.

Phillips was introduced by his friend Billy Shaw of Toccoa, a member of the NFL Hall of Fame.

Shaw described Phillips as “one of the most compassionate persons I have ever met. He has been willing to share the blessings that have come his way. Not only material gifts, but also he has shared his time mentoring other business people.”

Phillips is the chief executive officer of The Phillips Group, a private security firm headquartered in Toccoa.

“I’m just honored and humbled,” Phillips said, upon receiving the BSA award.
