Police Chief disrupts rumors about the death of a Toccoa man

Despite rumors circulating around Toccoa-Stephens County the Toccoa Police Department confirmed on Friday, that they suspected no foul play in the recent death of a Toccoa man.

According to Toccoa Police Chief Jimmy Mize, his officers responded to a call at 8 Argo Street, the night of December 23, in reference to an unresponsive person.

EMS and Fire Units were able to transport the victim, identified as 25-year-old Dontarian Greg Brown, to Stephens County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Mize said that on scene officers received information of several possible causes of death and interviewed parties to obtain as much information as possible.

While at the hospital, the Coroner’s office began their investigation and later transported Brown to the GBI Crime Lab for a pending autopsy and further investigation.

Mize told WNEG News on Friday about the preliminary results of the autopsy.

“In the death of Mr. Brown, we had waited until we got the preliminary results back from the crime lab,” Mize said. “The initial autopsy showed no physical trauma to the outside of the body or the inside of the body, which lays to rest the issue of a beating or a fight that he might be involved in that would have initially caused the death. What we are dealing with right now is just an unknown death until the crime lab finishes their toxicology report and the doctor finalizes the autopsy report.”

The investigation is ongoing.

Mize encourages anyone with helpful information regarding the death of Brown, to contact Investigator Kevin Griffin at 706-282-3299 or the GBI Office at 706-348-4866.

WNEG News will continue to provide coverage as additional information is released.
