Mr. Stuart Pearce Mellichamp

Mr. Stuart Pearce Mellichamp, 77, a resident of the Wilkinson Center in Toccoa, Georgia, died Saturday, September 18, 2021, after an extended period of declining health.

Born on November 4, 1943 in Greenwich, Connecticut, he was the son of the late Duncan Adair Mellichamp, Sr., and Elizabeth McRae Mellichamp.  He was a graduate of Toccoa High School, Class of 1961, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology from the University of Georgia in 1966.

He was admitted to the U. S. Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island.  Upon graduation, he was posted for three years at the U. S. Naval Base in Charleston, South Carolina, aboard the USS Meadowlark minesweeper.  Subsequently, he was assigned as an American advisor to the South Vietnamese Navy and spent his last year of naval service in Vietnam.  He was awarded a Bronze Star with Combat “V” for valor and retired with the rank of Lieutenant, Junior Grade.

He returned to the University of Georgia, finishing a Master of Science Education degree in 1975, and began his career as a science instructor at Simpsonville High School (SC).  He completed additional post-graduate studies at Clemson University where he was an instructor and finished his career teaching at Greenville Technical College.  He retired in 2012 after helping several generations of students acquire an appreciation of science.

Stuart is survived by three brothers:  Dr. Duncan Adair Mellichamp, Jr. (Suzanne), of Santa Barbara, California; Dr. Joseph McRae Mellichamp (Peggy) of Johns Creek, Georgia; and Dr. James F. Mellichamp (Daniel) of Mount Airy, Georgia; one nephew, Jonathan Mellichamp of Orlando, Florida, and one niece, Jennifer Mellichamp of Mobile, Alabama.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 2, 2021, from 10:00 AM until noon at the Acree-Davis Funeral Home.  A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
