Monroe Area Sweeps Indians Friday Night

The Stephens County Indians fell victim to scoring spurts by the Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes in both the girls’ and boys’ games and were swept on the road at Monroe on Friday night.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Indians led 22-21 at the half, but were outscored 22-7 in the 3rd quarter and fell by a final of 56-42.

The Lady Canes Jakiyah Butts scored 17 of her game high 28 points in the decisive 3rd quarter including three 3-pointers in the quarter. Hailey Wallace added 14 for Monroe Area in a game that saw only four Lady Canes score.

Stephens County was led by A’Niya Mayweather with 10 points and MyAngel Carter with 9.

The Lady Indians fall to 1-3 in region-8 AAA play and 3-15 overall. Monroe Area improves to 9-9 overall and 2-2 in the region.

In the boys’ game, Monroe Area took a 10-point lead into halftime and never let the Indians get closer than 8 in the 2nd half and rolled to a 71-51 win to remain undefeated at home this season.

Vonte Newell led the Purple Hurricanes with 24 points and Jeremy Anderson added 15.

Stephens County was led by AJ Russell with 10 points and Cam Lacy added 9.

The Indians fall to 2-2 in the region and 9-8 overall. Monroe Area is still unbeaten in the region at 4-0 and 15-3 overall.

Stephens County will return home on Tuesday when both teams host Hebron Christian in another region-8 battle. The Hebron Christian girls’ team is considered the number one team in the state of Georgia.

Airtime Tuesday on WNEG is set for 5:45 P.M. with tipoff for the girls’ game at 6 P.M.
