Marvin Smith

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul…

Although Marvin Smith passed away on Wednesday, November 23rd, his legacy will continue through the lives of his family and those he has influenced through sharing the love of Jesus while teaching Sunday School, singing in the First Baptist Church of Toccoa choir, and sharing his testimony with others. Marvin also loved cats, reading, airplanes, meeting new people, and watching his grandchildren grow up.

Marvin was born to Emery Elmer Smith and Vergie Inez Koon Smith in Sylvania, Georgia on October 30th, 1939. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1961 and entered the United States Marine Corps. Afterwards, Marvin worked in the automobile industry. In 1963 he married his wife of nearly 50 years, Helen Everett. She preceded him in death in 2013.

He is survived by his second wife, Betty Payne Harrison, who he married in 2014, as well as her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Marvin was the youngest of four children- Marguerite Pye of Sylvania, GA, Edwin Smith of Vidalia, GA, and Nell Mock, also of Sylvania. Marvin has two children, Everett Smith (Allyson) of Statesboro, GA and Andrea Cleveland (Derek), of Toccoa, GA. He has four grandchildren, Victoria Robbins (Tyler) and Maggie Smith of Statesboro, GA, and Ryan Cleveland (Gabby) of Colbert, GA and Ben Cleveland (Kaitlyn) of Baltimore, MD, as well as one great-grandchild on the way.

The family is also grateful for the kindness of those who have served Marvin and Betty during his extended illness.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the First Baptist Church of Toccoa, 475 E. Tugalo Street, Toccoa, Georgia 30577.

…Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
