More information on a report last week of a man who died while walking up Currahee Mountain.

Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley identified them an as Bobby Ray Smith of Toccoa.

Shirley said Smith’s body was found near the mountain trail last week by passersby.

“The Stephens County Sheriff’s office received a call from 911 about an individual lying on the dirt road near Currahee Mountain and was unconscious. Upon arrival, deputies and EMS the individual was dead at the scene. The coroner was called and it was ruled as a natural death,” Shirley said.

Shirley said three witnesses told authorities they waved to Smith as they drove up the mountain.

According to Shirley, Smith, who was retired from Tabor Motors, was a fixture around downtown Toccoa and will be missed.

“It was Bobby’s normal routine to walk up Currahee Mountain,” Shirley said. “He was an avid walker. For as many years as I can remember he would walk around downtown Toccoa. He was a great guy in good physical condition and we will miss seeing him around town.”

Shirley said Smith died of an apparent heart attack while on his walk.
