Main Street Toccoa celebrates 6th Historic plaque unveiling

Main Street Toccoa recently held its sixth historic plaque unveiling of  the 2018-2019 series.

According to Main Street Manager Christian Hamilton, the unveiling was dedicated to the downtown building that formerly housed Stephens Federal Savings & Loan, and is currently occupied by Oconee Federal Savings & Loan, located on the corner of Doyle and Pond streets.

Hamilton said Thursday’s ceremony brought out a crowd, comprised of Oconee Federal stafff, city staff, local historically-minded citizens and downtown business owners.

Constructed between 1896 and 1897, the property was originally the home of First United Methodist Church.

In 1958, the property became home to Stephens Federal Savings & Loan Association.

During the ceremony, attendees traded stories detailing the property’s rich history.

Hamilton tells WNEG News the next historic plaque dedication will take place at  the American Legion building on Doyle Street. He adds that the date has not been determined for the next dedication.

The historic plaque program highlights historic buildings in Toccoa, and the remaining plaques are set to follow each month.

Once all plaques have been installed, they will be added to Main Street Toccoa’s Historic Walking Tour Guide.
