Lula Man arrested after Thursday Chase and Collision in Cornelia

By Rob Moore, Public Information Officer for the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office

A brief vehicle pursuit in Cornelia Thursday afternoon landed a Lula man in the Habersham County Detention Center facing more than a dozen charges.

Habersham County Sheriff’s Office personnel attempted to arrest 37-year-old Marvin Chris Mangum just before 2 p.m. after positively identifying him as a known felon wanted out of Hall County.

An investigatory traffic stop was initiated on Ivie Street just off Sunshine Circle in Cornelia, at which time Mangum failed to yield to deputies and initiated a vehicle pursuit.

Mangum ran the stop sign at the intersection with Hoyt Street, losing control of the Ford Ranger truck he was driving and then brushing against the PIT bumper of a Habersham County Sheriff’s Office unit before running the stop sign and turning left onto Level Grove Road toward downtown Cornelia.

The pursuit led to a vacant portion of a gravel parking lot, where the suspect vehicle jumped a ditch before colliding with a Habersham County Sheriff’s Office unit on Hoyt Street beside Hillside Baptist Church.

Mangum then fled on foot, being apprehended by a Habersham County Sheriff’s Office patrol K9 in front of The Lord’s Help Soup Kitchen at 236 Level Grove Road in Cornelia.

The Georgia State Patrol investigated the collisions and charged Mangum with driving under the influence.

The first sheriff’s office vehicle sustained no damage, while the second vehicle sustained damage to the front left fender area but is drivable and in service.

In addition to the DUI charge by GSP, Mangum is charged by the sheriff’s office with possession of methamphetamine and fleeing or attempting to elude, both felonies, as well as obstructing or hindering law enforcement officers, two counts of failure to obey stop sign, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, hit and run/failure to stop and render aid, unsafe vehicle or equipment, defective tires, exhaust system violation, too fast for conditions, and failure to yield right of way.

Total bond for the charges in Habersham County is $15,600.

Mangum also faces a probation hold from Hall County.

Mangum was transported by Habersham County Emergency Services ambulances to Northeast Georgia Medical Center Habersham for treatment of minor injuries, then was booked in at the Habersham County Detention Center in Clarkesville.

No deputies were injured.
