Local Law Enforcement Honored at Governor’s Challenge Awards

The Demorest and Cornelia Police Departments were honored at the 17th Annual Governor’s Challenge Awards program hosted by the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety at the Hyatt Regency in Savannah last week.

The annual recognition program for statewide law enforcement agencies of all sizes features awards in seven different categories based on department size as well as several other specialty categories and a grand prize, the Governor’s Cup, given to the top performing department among all categories.

The Demorest Police Department was the 1st place recipient in category 1, which is for departments with 1-10 officers.

And the Cornelia Police Department won 3rd place in category 2, which include departments with 11-25 officers.

The Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety Harris Blackwood, said in a press release that these recipients have taken active roles in improving the safety of the roads and highways in their communities.

Designed to award outstanding achievements in highway safety enforcement and education, the awards recognize agencies for the approach and effectiveness of their overall highway safety programs.

Agencies are evaluated not just for enforcement initiatives, but for unique problem-solving in their communities, using public information activities, and creating departmental policies that support their traffic enforcement campaign efforts.

A total of 23 different law enforcement agencies received awards.
