Lions Sweep Indians

The Franklin County Lions girls and boys basketball teams picked up region wins over Stephens County Wednesday night at the Currahee Arena.

In the girls game, Franklin County jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and never trailed. The Lady Indians trailed by six at the half and made a valiant effort to catch up at the end, but lost 50-49.

Ranajah Verdell led the Lady Indians with 16 points and NaNa Eades chipped in with 10. The Lady Lions had three players in double-figures. Journey Roberts had 13 points, Bailee Aderholt scored 12 and Paris Gaye added 11. The loss puts the Lady Indians at 13-6 overall and now 4-2 in the region. Franklin County’s win gives the Lady Lions a 10-7 record on the season and 4-1 in the region.

The Stephens County boys led the Franklin County boys by six at the half, but were outscored in the second half 42-18, and dropped their third straight game 68-48. Tyrece Mackie was the lone Indian to score in double figures with 15. Franklin County was led by David Witcher with 21 points. Keyland Rutledge had 16 points while hauling down almost 20 rebounds. Micah Swint also had 11 points.

The Stephens County boys are now 8-10 and 2-5 in region play while Franklin County’s boys are 10-9 and 3-4 in region play.

Both the Indians and Lady Indians get today off before hosting Hart County on Friday at the Currahee Arena. Game time is 7 P.M. and air time on WNEG will be 6:45 P.M.
