Lady Indians Lose in Region Tourney

The Stephens County Lady Indians’ basketball season comes to a close after a loss in the first round of the Region 8-AAAA playoffs.

Stephens County led by as many as nine points in the second half, but Oconee County took control in the fourth quarter on the way to a 49-39 win Tuesday night in Watkinsville.

Looking for their first state playoff berth since 2014, Stephens County led 26-17 in the third quarter after a Savannah Broska three-pointer. However, the Lady Warriors ended the game on a 32-13 run to clinch their first state playoff berth since 2015.

Leading the Lady Indians in scoring was NaNa Eades with 19 points. Kiki Howard added nine points.

Julia Peroni led Oconee County with 14 points and Vanessa Sekandi added 12 points, all in the second half.

The Lady Indians end their season 5-19. This also marked the final game for lone Lady Indian senior Kaniyah Laboon.

Meanwhile, Oconee County moves to 15-11 with the win and will play Madison County in the girls’ region semifinals on Thursday in Toccoa.

While the girls’ season has finished, the Stephens County Indian boys’ basketball team will play in the region semifinals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at home against Madison County. WNEG and wnegradio.com will air that game beginning around 5:20 p.m.
