Lady Indians Fall in Close Game to Lady Pirates; Move to Elimination Bracket

The Stephens County Lady Indians fell to top ranked Appling County 6-3 Thursday afternoon in the double elimination AA state playoffs in Columbus.

The Lady Pirates got on the board first in the bottom of the first when leadoff hitter Mellisa Nails scored on a bases loaded line drive that Stephens County’s Maddie McGee caught in center field and turned into a double play at 2nd base.
The Lady Indians came back to tie in the top of the 2nd when Carson Stowe singled and scored on Riley Walker’s 2-out RBI single.
The Lady Pirates came back with 4 more runs in the top of the 3rd inning on 5 hits and added on a run in the bottom of the 4th to make it 6-1.
Appling County’s star pitcher Pressley Harrison was outstanding all day and retired 13 straight Lady Indians until with two outs in the 6th inning Nyleigh Hutto singled and scored on Carley Funderburke’s 2-run home run. It was Funderburke’s 13th home run of the season.
Harrison picked up the win on the mound allowing 3 runs on 5 hits and striking out six and Nails was the star at the plate with a single, double, and triple and scoring three runs.
Walker got the loss going three innings and Elle Hicks pitched three scoreless innings of relief.
The Lady Indians will now try to advance through the elimination racket and will face the winner of Rockmart and Sonoraville tomorrow morning at 11 A.M. If they win that game they will play again at 3 P.M.
