James Edward Moore

James Edward Moore, 82, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away Thursday, November 26, 2020.

Born in 1938, in Toccoa, Georgia to James Hoyt and Nettie Bell Moore, he was the third of their five children.

James attended Toccoa High School, where he played on the basketball team and met his future wife.  After graduating high school in 1956, he enrolled in Georgia Tech, where he majored in mechanical engineering on the cooperative plan. He graduated from Georgia Tech in 1961.

James married Peggy Joyce Head (daughter of G. Clinton and Zephyr Head) in 1958 at the Hill Street Baptist Church in Toccoa. Together, they had two children: Mindy Barker of Jacksonville, Florida (married to Col. Glenn Barker Ret.) and Professor James Moore Jr. of London, United Kingdom (married to Dr. Bindi Brook). He was also the proud grandfather of four grandchildren:  James Moore III of Toronto, Canada, Mary Beth McCall of Jacksonville, Florida (married to Cameron McCall), Jacquelyne Annette Moore of College Station, Texas, and Haley Lanigan of Gainesville, Florida.

Early in his career, James worked for Coats & Clark in Lagrange, Georgia, and then moved to their Toccoa site in 1963.  In addition to his general engineering and plant management duties, James was tasked with increasing diversity across the workforce due to the high regard and respect given him throughout the entire company. In 1978, the family moved to Winston Salem, North Carolina, where James started his own company, Carolina Metalizing.  He grew the company to over 100 employees before leaving to join Nimslo Inc., and subsequently, RJ Reynolds.  He retired from full-time work in 1999 and moved to Jacksonville, continuing to consult part-time for many years thereafter.

James was a caring father and grandfather, always ready with a smile and a story to tell. He had many good friends and loved to recount adventures, generally ending his tales with, “We sure had a good time.” He could fix anything, and was enthusiastically well-versed in automobiles of the mid-20th century based on his involvement in the family car business as a teen. He was an active member of the Elks Lodge in Toccoa, and served as Exaulted Ruler 1970-71. He was a skilled golfer, playing left-handed, despite being right-handed. He played at St. Andrews in Scotland, and scored a hole-in-one on the famed 17th hole at TPC. He was a great fan of Georgia Tech sports, a love that he passed on to his son, who followed in his father’s footsteps by also studying mechanical engineering there.

He is survived by his loving wife, children, their spouses, grandchildren, two sisters, and one brother (sisters Barbara Schaeffer of Demorest Georgia and Jennie Williams of Pendleton South Carolina and brother Mike Moore of Daytona Beach).

Funeral services Thursday, December 3, 2020, 1:45 p.m. at Deermeadows Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Florida.
