Indians Win One-Lose One- in Diamond Day at Habersham
The Stephens County Indians split a pair of games on Saturday in the 6th annual Patrick Mayfield Memorial Diamond Day in Demorest.
The Diamond Day, involving three teams including Habersham Central and Stephens County, is in honor of Mayfield who coached in both Habersham and Stephens County and passed away in 2019 at the age of 52.
The day opened with Habersham Central defeating West Hall 11-1 in five innings.
In game two, Hayden Scott had all three RBI’s and pitched three innings to lead Stephens County to a 3-2 victory over West Hall.
All of Scott’s RBI’s came with two outs in the inning and Stephens County led 3-0 heading into the top of the 6th inning.
West Hall, now 2-4 on the season, closed within one in the top of the 6th trimming the lead to 3-2, but the Indians’ Findley Ward got the side out in the 7th to pick up the save.
Scott got the win for Stephens County and Dru Daves also pitched three innings in relief.
The Indians had a 6-4 come from behind win over the Spartans earlier in the week.
In the nightcap, Habersham Central scored 8 runs in the first three innings and rolled to a 10-2 win over Stephens County.
Mason Witt had 4 RBIS and Maverick Chitwood added 2 RBI’s and pitched six innings to lead the Raiders, now 4-2 on the season.
Tyler Zigan and Ismael Matias had RBI’s for the Indians.
Konnor Loudermilk pitched 2 and 2/3 innings for Stephens County to take the loss. It was the Indians first loss of the season.
Stephens County is now 5-1 on the season and will travel to Commerce on Tuesday. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 P.M. with airtime at 5:20 P.M. on WNEG.
