Indians Tie in Season Opener

It is not something that you typically say after a baseball season opener…tie.

The Stephens County Indians and the highly ranked Flowery Branch Falcons played a seven inning tie Monday night at Flowery Branch. With the foggy, rainy weather conditions, both coaches agreed to end the game after the 7 complete innings and not take the game to extra innings.

Both starting pitchers, Davis Swenson for Stephens County and Zach Wagner of Flowery Branch pitched 4 strong scoreless innings. Swenson allowed just 2 hits and struck out 6. Wagner allowed 1 hit and struck out 5.

The Indians got on the board in the top of the 5th inning when Dawson Sorrells walked and scored on Davis Swenson’s double.

Flowery Branch came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the inning on 3 hits and 3 walks.

The Indians cut the lead to 3-2 after 6 innings when Jordan Page scored when Sorrells was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The Falcons were able to get out of the inning with the lead on a double play.

Stephens County tied the game in the top of the 7th inning on a Page two-out infield single that scored Isaiah Martin from 3rd base. Sorrells got the Falcons 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 7th to leave the game tied.

The Indians Baseball team will return to action this Saturday when they play a doubleheader in Habersham. The Indians will face Rabun County at 2 P.M. and face the host Habersham Central Raiders at 5 P.M. Airtime Saturday will be 1:45 P.M. on WNEG.
