Indians Roll Big in Home Opener for First Win

Stephens County quarterback Branson Stowe ran for one touchdown and passed to Kaiden Harbin for three more to lead the Indians to their first win of the season, 38-0, over Union County Friday night at The Reservation in the first meeting between the two schools.

Stowe scored on a 31-yard touchdown run to start the scoring and then connected on a 70-yard touchdown pass to Harbin to jump out to a 14-0 lead after one quarter.

The Indians scored 17 more points in the 2nd quarter. Freshman Josiah Worsley connected on a 32-yard field goal, Stowe connected with Harbin again on a 51-yard touchdown pass, and Dallas Hague scored on a 7-yard touchdown run for a 31-0 lead at the half.

The game had a running clock and was scoreless in the 3rd quarter, but Stowe and Harbin connected again for a 67-yard touchdown pass for the final score of 38-0.

The Indians’ defense limited Union County to four first downs and less than 100 yards. The defense was also responsible for 3 interceptions in the game by Seth Fulbright, Duke Collins, and Cashus Roebuck.

Stephens County Head Coach Thomas Flowers said that there were changes made and that the players were receptive.

“Made a lot of changes as a staff. We came in on Sunday, and we said that we can’t keep doing the same things because we’re going to keep getting the same results. It wasn’t just the staff, because then on Monday, when we brought the team in, we told them the changes we were going to make. It was going to be hard changes, going to be more work, and it was going to be more grueling, there was going to be more bodies on the ground at practice, but the kids did not flinch. They said they wanted it. They practiced hard all week. They were hurting. They came out here, and all I heard was that we were an undisciplined football team by some of the naysayers, and this is a disciplined football team. We have 9 starters that are sophomores right now, and they are learning from their mistakes. They’re coming in and working every day. And I could not be more proud of this staff. I thank this community. This community is so good to me and my staff, and this team. I love this community. I love this team.”

Stephens County improves to 1-2 and will have an open date next week. Union County falls to 0-3.

Stephens County inducted six former Indians into the Hall of Fame before the game: Darryl Swilling, George Sanders, Valerie Brown-Stephens, Michael Dooley, Brad Chambers, and Chris Barrett.
