Indians Rally to Top Raiders

Trailing by three touchdowns in the second quarter, Stephens County scored the last 34 points of the game to come from behind and defeat Habersham Central 41-28 in Friday night football at the Reservation.

“In the first half, we just had those big plays they had that got us down a little bit,” said Stephens County Head Coach Wesley Tankersley. “We told our guys to keep playing. They were getting tired. They had a lot of guys playing both ways. We felt good that if we could score coming out of half, we could come back.”

Habersham Central scored the first two touchdowns of the game on Tre’ Luttrell touchdown passes to Donnie Curry and Dontarius Bailey.

After Hudson Spurlock scored for the Indians on a 44-yard touchdown run, Luttrell threw a third touchdown pass, again to Curry, and then ran for a touchdown to make it 28-7, Raiders.

A second touchdown run for Spurlock of 45 yards for Stephens County made it 28-14 at half.

In the third quarter, Kenny Colwell scored on a 1-yard touchdown run and then threw a 77-yard touchdown pass to Gamarion Carter to tie the game at 28 heading to the fourth quarter.

Following an interception at the end of the third quarter by Mardy Lanier, Colwell found Kamon Taylor for a 36-yard touchdown pass to give the Indians their first lead at 34-28 on the opening play of the fourth quarter.

Another interception by DJ Jones gave the Indians the ball back and MJ Jones scored on a 10-yard touchdown run to wrap up the scoring with about eight minutes to go.

The win puts Stephens County at 3-2 on the season. Habersham is also 3-2 after the loss.

This Friday, the Indians are home to face Cedar Shoals in their final non-region game of the year. Meanwhile, Habersham Central is off this coming week.
