Indians Hoops Teams Fall at Madison County

The Stephens County Indian boys came up just short in their bid to upset state-ranked Madison County Saturday night in Danielsville.

Trailing by six late, Madison County scored 11 straight points and down two points late, Corey Richie’s potential game-winning three pointer just missed, allowing the Red Raiders to escape with a 64-62 win over the Indians.

Richie led all scorers with 25 points for the Indians, while Javin Gordon added 13 points and Cam Lacy scored 11. Jay Carruth led three Madison County players in double figures with 21 points.

The loss breaks the Indian boys’ four-game winning streak and drops them to 6-6 on the season.

Meanwhile in the girls’ game, down by 16 in the second half, the Lady Indians got to within six several times, but could get no closer and fell to the Lady Raiders, 59-49.

Makiya Knox had 13 points to lead the Lady Indians and Carson Stowe added 10 points for Stephens County. Janiah Borders had 24 points to lead Madison County and Kelsei Gresham added 11.

The Lady Indians fell to 2-11 with the loss.

Prior to traveling to Danielsville on Saturday, Stephens County hosted Rabun County on Friday night in Toccoa.

In the boys’ game, Stephens County won 59-52. Cam Lacy and Nuri Winters each had 10 points in the win.

The Lady Indians again were facing a Lady Wildcat team that was 12-1 on the season and it was obvious that the Lady Cats had more experience, especially on defense. Rabun County took the win 66-26.

The Lady Indians were led by A’Naya Mayweather who scored all six of her points in the first half.

Next up for Stephens County basketball is Region 8-AAA play, which tips off Tuesday night in Carnesville against Franklin County. The girls’ game starts at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Airtime on WNEG is set for 5:45 p.m.
