Indians Head to Football Playoffs Tonight

The second season starts tonight for the Stephens County Indian football team.

Stephens County heads on the road this evening to face Pickens in the first round of the AAAA football playoffs.

The Indians are the third seed in Region 8-AAAA, finishing with a 7-3 overall record.

Meanwhile, Pickens is 8-2 on the year and is the second seed out of Region 7-AAAA.

The Dragons are led by running back Shannon Brooks, who has 2,159 yards rushing on the season and is headed to the University of Minnesota next year.

Indians’ Offensive Coordinator Roger Gentry said Stephens County is going to have to play very well to keep the season going against a hard-nosed Pickens team.

“Pickens is going to stand in there and going to fight you,” said Gentry. “It is one of those games where you are going to have to start fast and not let them get the upper hand. It is going to be a good ballgame, but I think our kids will accept the challenge and play hard.”

The winner of this game will play either West Laurens or Bainbridge in the second round next week.

Kick-off from Pickens High School tonight is set for 7:30 p.m.

Coverage begins at 6 p.m. on AM 630 WNEG with Tommy Palmer’s Countdown To Kickoff. Coach’s Corner starts at 7 p.m. and pre-game coverage from the stadium starts at 7:15 p.m.

Elsewhere in playoff action involving Region 8-AAAA teams, Region Champ Buford hosts Southeast Whitfield, Region runner-up North Oconee hosts Gilmer, and Region fourth seed White County travels to face Cartersville.

A number of other area teams also made the playoffs.

Franklin County finished fourth in Region 7-AAA and will travel to Jefferson. Hart County is the second seed from Region 8-AAA and will host East Hall, and Oconee County, coached by former Indians’ head coach Travis Noland is the fourth seed from Region 8-AAA and will travel to face West Hall.
