Indians Get First Win in a Thriller at Inferno

Cornelius Curry’s go ahead basket with just over 4 seconds remaining lifted the Stephens County Indians to an exciting first win of the season defeating Elbert County 68-67 Tuesday night at The Inferno in Elberton.

AJ Russell’s free throw with 23 seconds remaining gave the Indians a two point lead in the game, but Elbert County’s Jamil Burton scored while fouled, and sank the free throw, to give the Blue Devils a one point lead with 16 seconds remaining, and set up Curry’s heroics.

The game was tight throughout with both teams having their share of the lead. Elbert County led by as many as eight early, and Stephens County led by as many as six in the 3rd quarter.

The Indians placed three in double figures with Corey Richie leading the way with 22 points, 16 in the 2nd half. The Indians also got 15 points from Tyrece Mackie and 11 from Aaron Scott.

Burton led the Blue Devils with 25 points.

Indians Head Coach Jeremy Hughes had to miss this game, and will miss the next one, due to a suspension for an ejection last Saturday. Assistant Coach Chris Colwell handled the coaching duties.

Stephens County is now 1-10 on the season. Elbert County falls to 1-6.

 

In the girls game, Elbert County took a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and rolled to a 48-16 win over Stephens County.

The Lady Indians played well defensively after the opening quarter limiting the Lady Devils to just 10 field goals the rest of the game.

MyAngel Carter led the Lady Indians with 7 points, Aaniyah Allen led Elbert County with 20 points.

The lady indians fall to 0-11. Elbert County improves to 9-1.

Both the Indians and Lady Indians will now have two weeks off and will not play again until the Border War at Currahee Arena on December 28th and 29th.There will be four games each day.

On December 28th, the Habersham Central girls will facing West Oak meet T.L. Hanna of Anderson, S.C. at 3 P.M. followed by the Raider boys and West Oak at 4:30 P.M. The Lady Indians will take the court at 6 P.M. vs. Walhalla, and the Indian boys will follow at 7:30 with a rematch vs. Elbert County.

On December 29th, the Habersham Central girls will face Walhalla at 3, followed by the Raider boys and Elbert County at 4:30. The Lady Indians will face T.L. Hanna at 6 P.M., followed by the Indians and West Oak at 7:30.
