Indians-Flowers Earn First Win

The Stephens County Indians stopped Elbert County on the final play of the game on an Ashton Winters deflection to earn the first win of the season, and first win for head coach Thomas Flowers, defeating the Blue Devils 21-17 Friday night at the Granite Bowl in Elberton.

WNEG’s Ken Brady had the final call.

Isaiah Arthur also picked off an Elbert County pass with less than 4 minutes to go in the game. Arthur’s heroics came after an Indians fumble had set up Elbert around midfield.

Elbert County took a 1st quarter lead of 7-0 on a Mikell Allen 3-yard touchdown run and extended the lead to 10-0 in the 2nd quarter on a Harrison Mathews 33-yard field goal.

The Indians cut the lead to 3 on a Branson Stowe to Da’Von Swinton 21-yard touchdown pass and trailed 10-7 at the half.

Stowe and Swinton connected for two more scores in the 3rd quarter from 26 and 28 yards out to give the Indians a lead of 21-10.

The Blue Devils next drive started at their own 20 but quickly went 80 yards, culminated by a Brody Baker to D.K. Winn 17-yard touchdown pass for the final score of the game.

The win was an emotional one for Flowers.

Elbert County falls to 0-2. Stephens County improves to 1-1 with the home opener set for next Friday night when they host Cedar Shoals in the Stephens County High School Hall of Fame game.
