Indians Fall to Titans in OT

The Stephens County Indian boys came back from a double-digit deficit in the second half but came up just short in their bid to knock off one of the top teams in AAAA boys’ basketball, North Oconee.

Trailing 50-48, North Oconee’s Byrd Carter sent the game to overtime on a short jumper with 8 seconds to go. Then, the Titans outscored the Indians 12-3 in the extra period to win 62-53.

Corey Richie had 18 points to lead the Indians, while North Oconee had multiple players in double figures, led by Justin Payne with 14 points and Rhamari Brooks with 13 points.

With the loss, the Indians fall to 2-4.

In the girls’ game, North Oconee used a big second quarter to pull away to a 65-32 win over the Lady Indians.

Leading by 10 after one quarter, the Lady Titans outscored Stephens County 24-12 in the second quarter to pull away.

Reese Riddle had 14 points to lead the Lady Titans, while Tytiunna Tukes led the Lady Indians with 7 points.

The Stephens County did pick up a win on Friday night at West Hall, 57-15. In Friday’s game, the Lady Indians jumped out a 16-2 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Tukes had 18 points to lead Stephens County against West Hall, while Carson Stowe added 10 and Jaziya Harbin had nine points.

After this past weekend, the Lady Indians are now 2-6 on the year.

The boys’ and girls’ teams will both return home today to host Madison County in another non-region game. The girls’ game will begin at 5 p.m. with the boys to follow. Airtime today on WNEG is set for 4:45 p.m.
