Indians Fall to Raiders

Habersham Central took advantage of 4 Stephens County turnovers and held on for their first win in the series since 1996 downing the Indians 27-21 in Mt. Airy Friday night.

The Raiders got on the board first with 10:11 to go in the first quarter on a Ryte Woodruff to Pickett 40 yard touchdown pass to lead 7-0.

Stephens County tied the score at the beginning of the 2nd quarter on a 5 play drive culminating with a 38 yard touchdown run by Hudson Spurlock.

Habersham Central grabbed the lead for good with only 41 seconds to go in the half when Woodruff hit Caleb Wade with a 29 yard touchdown pass. The extra point was blocked and the Raiders led 13-7 at the half.

The Indians were backed up to start the 2nd half with two penalties and an Indians fumble (their 3rd turnover of the game) set the Raiders up at the Indians 14 yard line. On the very next play, Woodruff ran it in the end zone to make the score 19-7.

Stephens County battled back with a 12 play drive and a 1 yard touchdown run by Spurlock pulled the Indians closer at 19-14 with just over 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

The 4th turnover by the Indians set the Raiders up again deep in Indian territory and a Woodruff 4-yard run and 2-point conversion pass made the score 27-14 Habersham Central.

Moments later Mardy Lanier’s 65-yard kickoff return brought the Indians back within a touchdown at 27-21.

In the 4th quarter, the Indians drove the ball down to the Raiders 4 yard line with a chance to take the lead, but the drive stalled.

Woodruff led Habersham Central accounting for all of the Raiders points with two touchdown runs, two touchdown passes, and a 2-pt conversion pass.

Spurlock led the Indians rushing for 199 yards and two touchdowns.

With the loss, Stephens County falls to 1-4 on the season. Habersham Central improves to 2-2.

Stephens County will return to the road with a trip to Cedar Shoals in Athens this Friday night. Airtime will be 6:30 P.M. with the Indians Road Show. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 P.M.
