Indians Fall by 1 to Jefferson…Again

It was deja’ vu all over again.

Last year the Jefferson Dragons, as a member of Region-8, won the Region title and then capped it off with a state championship. Much of their Region success was due to three one-run victories over the Stephens County Indians.

Jefferson is now a member of Region 8-AAA, and the two teams met Tuesday night in a non-region match-up with similar results. The Dragons defeated the Indians 2-1 in 9 innings.

Both starting pitchers-Dawson Sorrells for the Indians, and UGA bound Lane Watkins for the Dragons, were outstanding. Sorrells got a non-decision going 7 innings and allowing just a run on 3 hits and striking out 5. Watkins also went 7 innings allowing one run on 4 hits and striking out 9.

Jefferson scored the first run of the game in the top of the third to lead 1-0, but the Indians tied it in the bottom of the 4th when Cayden Maxwell singled, moved to third base on a Davis Swenson single, and scored on Isaiah Martin’s ground ball out.

The score remained tied until the top of the 2nd extra inning. With one out Brycen Jewell singled and scored on Cole Watkins two-out single.

The Indians would threaten in the bottom of the 9th with runners at 1st and 3rd and one out, but could not push across the tying run.

Jewell picked up the win on the mound with 2 innings of relief. Jordan Page took the loss for the Indians.

Jefferson improves to 9-0 on the season. Stephens County has now dropped two straight and is 7-4-1. The two teams are scheduled to meet again on Thursday at Jefferson. Airtime is scheduled for 5:45 P.M. with first pitch at 5:55 P.M. on WNEG.
