Indians Fall at Monroe Area

The Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes outscored Stephens County 27-9 in the opening quarter and rolled to a 70-62 win over the Indians in boys varsity basketball Monday night in Monroe.

D.J. Hampton’s bucket gave the Indians their first lead at 9-8, but the Purple Hurricanes scored the next 19 points of the quarter to take the 18 point lead, and maintained a 14 point lead at the half.

Kenny Colwell scored 25 points, including seven 3-pointers to lead the Indians. Tyrece Mackie was also in double figures scoring 17.

Derrick Brown led Monroe Area with 28 points.

With the loss, Stephens County falls to 2-3 in Region-8 AAA play and 8-8 overall. Monroe Area improves to 13-8 overall and 4-2 in the Region.

Both Indians boys and girls varsity team will return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Region-8 rival Oconee County. WNEG will broadcast both games with airtime set for 5:45 P.M.
