Indians Boys Take Double Digit Win in Final Home Game

Tyrece Mackie’s 28 points helped lead the Stephens County Indians to a 75-65 victory over the Monroe Area Purple Hurricanes Tuesday night at the Currahee Arena.

Trailing by four at the half, the Indians out-scored the ‘Canes 45 to 31 in the second half, despite five players for Monroe hitting double figures.

Kenny Colwell had 14 of his 17 points in the first half. He was aided by D.J. Hampton and Corey Ritchie, who scored 8 points.

Six-foot seven Derrick Brown led the Hurricanes with 15 points, but fouled out in the 4th quarter. Damareon Whitner had 14 points for Monroe, Vonte Newell 13, Trey Thomas 11 and Zavious Williams had 10.

The win improves the Indians to 3-6 in Region-8 AAA and 9-11 overall. Monroe Area falls to 6-3 in the Region and 15-9 overall.

There was no girls game Tuesday night.

Both the boys and the girls will play their last regular season game Friday night at East Jackson. The girls game will be for the Region-8 regular season title and a chance to host in the Region tournament as the #1 seed next Wednesday. The SCHS boys already know that they will be matched up with Franklin County on Tuesday at 5 P.M. with the location still to be determined.

Airtime for both games this Friday night at East Jackson is set for 5:45 P.M. with the girls game beginning at 6 on WNEG.
