Indians Advance in State Playoffs

The Stephens County Indians boys basketball team advances in the AAAA State Playoffs.

The Indians led visiting Troup County by as many as 19 points, and by 14 points headed to the final quarter, but held off a furious Tiger comeback to come away with a 62-59 win Friday night at Currahee Arena.

Stephens County never trailed in the game scoring 19 points in both the 1st and 3rd quarters to grab a big lead. With 10 seconds to go in the game Nigel Green made one of two free throws to give the Indians a 3 point lead. Troup County had two shots before the final buzzer.

Takias Nails led the Indians in scoring with 20 points. Kenny Colwell added 15 and Ty Nails 12 for the victorious Indians now 17-10.

Troup County was led by Jaquavo McFarland’s 14 points.

The Indians will now advance to the 2nd round of the AAAA State playoffs to face Denmark in, a 70-46 winner over Ridgeland, on Thursday at 6:30 P.M. in Alpharetta. WNEG will broadcast the game live with airtime beginning at 6:15 P.M.

Other games involving teams from Region-8 included St. Pius  with an 81-40 win over Cedartown. Madison County came up just short against Cartersville falling 59-57, and Sandy Creek eliminated North Oconee 88-42.

State playoff first round results for other area teams included both Hart County boys and girls teams advancing in the AAA playoffs. The Bulldog boys defeated Pace Academy 54-50, and the girls ran away from Redan 75-21. The Franklin County boys, who made it in as an at-large team, pulled off the biggest shocker of the tournament so far winning at Central of Macon 45-43. The Rabun County and Banks County girls teams advanced, but the boys teams from both schools were eliminated.
