Indian Wrestlers Have Successful State Tourney

The Stephens County High School wrestling team pulls in its highest finish in decades.

As a team, the Indians took 17th place at this past weekend’s state AAAA wrestling tournament in Macon.

This year’s finish was five points away from a top 12 finish, the highest since 1969.

Also, the Indians had their first state runner-up since 1992 when Gary Walker finished 2nd in the 285 pound class.

Walker finished the year at 32-2 overall with 1st place medals at the King of the Mountain, John Smith Mountaineer, Arrowhead, Area, and Sectional Tournaments, to go along with the state runner-up finish.

Also, Devin Burns placed, taking home a 5th place medal in the 182 pound class.

That made the first time two Indian wrestlers placed at the state tournament since 2004 when the Indians had two 6th place finishers.

Jake Murray also made the top 12 round before falling out of the tournament.

Senior Blake Peeples also participated in the state tournament in the 160 pound class.
