Indian Hoops Split With Madison Co.

The Stephens County Indian boys’ basketball team returns home Tuesday with a chance at first place in the region.

Friday night, the Indians defeated Madison County, 70-57, in boys’ basketball in Danielsville.

Stephens County jumped out to an 11-1 lead, never trailed in the game and led by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Nigel Green led four Indians in double figures with 24 points. Takias Nails added 18 points, Ty Nails scored 13 and Kenny Colwell chipped in 11 points.

Dylan Carey led Madison County with 19 points.

The win moves Stephens County to 14-6 overall and 4-1 in Region 8-AAAA, just behind St. Pius, who visits Toccoa on Tuesday. Madison County drops to 6-14 overall and 2-3 in the region with the loss.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Indians were within six points in the third quarter, but Madison County went on a 24-11 to win, 68-50.

Renajah Verdell led the Lady Indians with 17 points and Kiki Howard added 14.

Kayla McPherson led the Lady Red Raiders with 33 points, including her 1,000th career point in the fourth quarter.

The win moves the Madison County girls to 19-2 overall and 4-1 in the region. The Lady Indians drop to 5-14 overall and 1-4 in the region with the loss.

In junior varsity action Friday, Stephens County won the girls’ game and Madison County won the boys’ game.

Stephens County will host St. Pius Tuesday in a varsity doubleheader. The girls’ game starts at 6 p.m. with the boys’ game to follow. Airtime on WNEG is set for 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.
