Indian Football Picks Up Second Win in a Row

Stephens County picks up a second win in a row on the gridiron.

Friday night, the Indians came from behind in the fourth quarter with two late touchdowns to defeat the Jackson County Panthers, 24-10, on the road in Jefferson.

Indians’ Head Coach Wesley Tankersley said there was great effort and toughness from the team in the win.

“I challenged them at halftime,” he said. “I’m very proud of how they rose to the challenge. We’ve been due a couple of these and it’s great to see these kids find that courage and momentum at the end to pull it out.”

Stephens County started strong, getting a safety after Jackson County was called for intentional grounding in the end zone to take an early 2-0 lead.

On the ensuing possession, Ben Stowe connected with Zhy Perry on a 34-yard touchdown pass to make it 9-0 in favor of the Indians.

However, Jackson County got 10 points in the second quarter on a 20-yard field goal and a short touchdown run to take the lead into halftime at 10-9.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Indian defense stood tall, stopping Jackson County on fourth down to give the offense the ball with good field position and the Indians took advantage as Ben Stowe ran it in from 10 yards out, then connected with Jahari Burns on a two-point conversion pass to put Stephens County back in front, 17-10.

One more defensive stop gave the Indians the ball and they not only ran out the clock, they ran it in the end zone as Zach Feaster scored from seven yards out for the final margin of victory.

With the win, the Indians move to 2-1 on the season, while Jackson County falls to 1-1. Stephens County returns to action this coming Friday at home against Madison County. Kick-off Friday is at 7:30 p.m. with coverage on WNEG starting at 5:30 p.m. with the Indian Tailgate Show.
