Indian Baseball Opens 2014 Season With Win
Ben Cleveland’s sharp single to right field scored Josh Slate from second base with the g0-ahead run in the sixth inning and Kain Hewitt, Tristan Powell and Slate combined on a five-hit shutout as the Stephens County Indians opened the 2014 baseball season with a 2-0 win over the Habersham Central Raiders Wednesday.
Hewitt struck out seven over 4 2/3 innings. Powell came on in relief to get the win and Slate got the save, striking out two in the final frame.
The Indians scored their second run when Evan Rumsey scored from third on a wild pitch.
Nick Foster pitched well for Habersham in the loss, allowing two runs and four hits over 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven.
Cleveland and Davis McCall each had two hits to lead the Indians.
Stephens County will face Habersham Central again next Wednesday in the Indians’ home opener.
