Hundreds Needed in Stephens County to Work in the 2020 U.S. Census

The 2020 Census begins April 1, 2020 and the U.S. Census Bureau is looking for men and women to work either full or part-time.

To be eligible, you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid Social Security number, and be a U.S. citizen.

This Friday, you will have an opportunity to apply for one of those jobs in person at the Ninth District Opportunity office in Toccoa.

Ninth District Community Resource Director Paula Duley said a representative from the U.S. Census Bureau will be here to take applications.

She says a variety of temporary jobs are available, including census takers, recruiting assistants, office staff, and supervisory staff.

“You can work part or full-time, you can work as many hours as you want. On Sundays you do get higher pay. You do get paid on a weekly basis. It starts at $14/hour up to $22/hr if you’re a supervisor,” she said.

Duley said census workers will also get 58-cents a mile when you drive anywhere.

And while some census takers will be out in the county, Duley says this also a good job for people who live in town and don’t have a vehicle.

“You will be assigned an area in your County and you go to each door and get people to answer the survey,” Duley said. “However, we have (public) housing here and intown neighborhoods so you don’t have to do the rural areas, you can walk around in your area, as many hours as you want to do that day and then come back and do the same thing the next day.”

Information gathered from citizens during the next Census will help determine the amount of federal funding each county will receive, Duley said.

Ninth District Opportunity receives federal funding for a number of different social service programs, such as the Home Heating Program, Weatherization Program, Head Start, Meals on Wheels, the Senior Lunch Program, and the Emergency Relief Program.

If you are interested in working with the U.S. Census Bureau, you can stop by the Ninth District office on Queen Street this Friday between 10a and 1p to fill out an application, or you can go online to https://census2020.gov/jobs.
