Gasaway Ready to Move on to “Next Chapter”

Former State House Representative for District 28 Dan Gasaway is moving on now that he has lost this third Special Primary to Chris Erwin.

After the results from all three counties were in Tuesday night, Gasaway told WNEG News that even though he lost, he believes the fight to ensure fair and honest elections was worth it.

“At this point I just want to thank everybody for their support in the last six year,” he said. “I hate that it ended this way, but I really feel like legal and accurate elections are something that we need to be concerned about. Again, I hate that all this has transpired, but I think the State will be better for it because it put this on Raffensberger’s radar screen. And he’s made a commitment to me that he wants to see it cleaned up.”

After losing the May Primary last year by just 65 votes, Gasaway filed suit against Erwin claiming some voters living along the District 28/District 10 dividing line in Habersham County had been given the wrong ballots when they went to vote in May.

In September after almost a week long hearing, Senior Superior Court Judge David Sweat agreed errors had been made in May and ordered a second Special Primary re-do in December.

In that race, Gasaway again lost, but by just two votes and on December 17th he again filed suit in Banks County Superior Court sighting numerous alleged improper or illegal votes cast in Banks and Habersham Counties.

And after another hearing in Banks County Superior Court at the end of January, Judge Sweat again ruled in Gasaway’s favor, throwing out four votes in Habersham County he said were either illegal or improper and ordered Erwin, who had been sworn in January 14 at the start of the 2019 General Assembly, to immediately step down from the office of State Representative for District 28.

That left the voters of District 28 without a Representative in this session of the General Assembly, which angered many in Stephens County who blamed Gasaway for Erwin’s removal from office.

When asked if he plans to run again for the District 28 seat Gasaway told WNEG News he’s ready to get on with his life and he has no regrets.

“Well, I’ve never faced and I’ve never seen a campaign as nasty as the one waged against me. And it’s taken a lot out of me and it’s taken a lot out of my family. Right now, I just want to put this behind me. I feel like I’ve served the people with honesty and dignity the past six years and I can live with that and go to the next chapter in my life,” Gasaway concluded.

Gasaway did not say what that next chapter would look like, but said he has no plans to run for State Representative again calling it, “a thankless job.”
