According to the Federal Drug Administration, the Salmonella contamination could make your pet sick and also poses a danger to humans handling the food or touching surfaces the food had been in contact with. Children, the elderly, and the immunocompromised are especially in danger.

Dogs who contract a Salmonella infection may have diarrhea, fever, vomiting, or appear lethargic. Even if your dog is not showing symptoms, it can still spread the infection. The FDA says if your dog has eaten the recalled food, contact your veterinarian.

According to the FDA, humans may experience the following symptoms, “Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and fever. Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.” If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider.
