Concrete barriers in place after fatal accident New Year’s Eve

Officials with the Stephens County Park and Recreation department are working to install concrete barriers, following the recent death of a Royston man who drove his truck off the broken bridges and plunged into Lake Hartwell on New Year’s Eve.

Stephens County Recreation Department Director Richard Adams told WNEG News on Thursday about the heightened safety measures.

“We’re adding two foot by four foot concrete barriers,” Adams said.

According to Adams the new barriers will be in place after today.

Prior to the fatal accident, the broken bridges were outfitted with some barriers; however, the new barriers will prevent anything similar from happening again.

According to Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers, there has been no word that the portion of Broke Bridge on the South Carolina side will also have new barriers installed.

WNEG News will provide continued coverage as additional information is released.
