Clerk of Court says Avoid Latest Scam

Stephens County Clerk of Court Tim Quick is warning listeners of the latest scam that is using phone and e-mail to contact citizens and even some businesses. ” There are phone calls going around that have to do with your Social Security numbers. It is bogus. Social Security officials do not call you-just like the I.R.S. does not call you-they send letters.”

Quick says the scammers do not stop with just phone calls. “When you don’t respond (to the call) you receive an e-mail that is basically telling you that ignoring the information will force you to appear before a Magistrate Judge. It is asking for your Social Security number. Please ignore. This is a scam. It has nothing to do with our office or magistrate court. It is just a scam. If you give them your Social Security number they will have access to your information. So please just hang up or delete the e-mail. Do not fall for this please.”

Quick says if you ever have a question about the legality of a  contact, call the Stephens County Clerk of Court’s office at 706-886-9496.
