Charges pending for Toccoa man involved in Thursday’s fatal accident

The Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating Thursday’s fatal accident that claimed the life of a Stephens County educator.

Connie Evans Powell, a paraprofessional at Big A Elementary, was struck head on by a 2018 Ford F-150 Super Crew, driven by Jeremy Lee Scalf, 28,of Toccoa who failed to maintain his lane.

According to Stephens County Sheriff Randy Shirley, the accident happened at 5:57 a.m. Thursday morning, just below Davis Mountain Road, on West Currahee Street, formerly Dicks Hill Parkway.

Shirley told WNEG News that Powell was fatally injured in the crash.

According to reports, Scalf was airlifted to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries sustained in the crash.

Grief counselors were available for the students, faculty and staff at Big A Elementary following the accident Thursday.

Shirley added that Powell was a tremendous educator and friend.

According to troopers with the GSP, Scalf faces pending charges.
