Bulldogs Edge Indians in Toccoa

A strong running game propels Hart County to a win over Stephens County in non-region football.

Friday night, Hart County jumped out to a 14-0 lead on the way to a 26-13 win over the Indians at the Reservation in Toccoa.

Stephens County Head Coach Wesley Tankersley said the game is a chance for the Indians to learn and grow.

“Our effort was there throughout the whole game,” said Tankersley. “We just have to execute our game plan and the fundamentals better.”

After a scoreless first quarter, Malachi Thomas got the Bulldogs on the scoreboard in the opening minute of the second quarter on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Hart County made it 14-0 on a 7-yard touchdown pass from Luke Lee to Blake Skelton with four minutes to go until halftime.

Stephens County cut the lead to 14-7 in the third quarter on a Hudson Spurlock two-yard touchdown run, his sixth of the season.

However, J’len Lackey scored twice in the fourth quarter, on runs of six and 31 yards, to give Hart County a 26-7 lead.

The Indians got one more score halfway through the final quarter on a 75-yard touchdown pass from Kenny Colwell to Gamarion Carter.

The loss drops Stephens County to 1-1 on the season. Hart County moves to 2-0.

This coming Friday, the Indians head on the road to take on Athens Academy in another non-region game.
