Brown Returns-Named Lady Indians Basketball Coach

Stephens County High School has named a new girl’s head basketball coach, and it is someone who is very familiar with that position. Stephens County High School Athletic Director Chuck King has announced that Jerry Brown will be returning to lead the girls’ basketball program.

Brown said that he could not pass on the opportunity to coach again.”I thought long and hard about it and talked with Laura (his wife). I just felt like I wanted to give it a shot and see if I can make a difference in some kids lives. I was very fortunate that they are giving me this opportunity to come back.”

Coach Brown came to Stephens County early in his coaching career in the fall of 1979 as the assistant girls’ basketball coach for one year before moving into the head coaching position. He remained for 30 years before retiring from coaching at the end of the 2010 season. Coach Brown did serve as interim girls coach for one year during the 2015-16 season. During his career, he led the Lady Indians to several region titles and state playoff berths, and in 1979, led them to the state title game.

He says he will use his years of experience to try to help the current players be successful after their high school playing days are over. “You look back and you see the young ladies, and they are grown and have children, and some of their children have played and gone on already. Some of your best years is when you have good kids that play hard, do what they are supposed to do, and you get everything you can out of them. It makes me feel so good when I see these young ladies successful in life, and I always hope there is somewhere in there, a little something that happened, during basketball season and in the locker room that sustained them through the tough times and helped them be successful.”

Jerry Brown will take over for Laura Baker who announced her resignation on March 31st after serving 5 years as the head girls basketball coach.
