County Commissioner Dennis Bell was recently appointed by the newly instated ACCG President Harry Lange, as Vice Chair of the Public Safety and Courts policy committee for the 2018-2019 policy year.

Bell told WNEG News that he feels honored to serve on the ACCG Public Safety Committee.

“I’m very honored to know that the ACCG has that much trust in me and to think that I can do this job, and I will, I’ll do the best that I can with it,” Bell said.

Bell continued by saying how he hopes to continue to push for an increase in salary for county and municipal officers.

“We will be working closely with the legislative committee, and we’ll actually be part of that as well,” Bell said. “There are certain meetings that we will go to in different places in the State. And of course, one of my main goals will be to push for more money for county and municipal officers. I’ve been doing that since I’ve been with the Police Officer Association of Georgia.”

According to ACCG’s website, the Public Safety and the Courts committee considers issues pertaining to the funding and administration of the court system, criminal justice, public safety, law enforcement, corrections and jails.

The committee also looks at alternatives to incarceration as a means of limiting the fiscal and social costs it has on counties along with funding for law enforcement and firefighting training.

Additionally, the committee gives special attention to emergency management, disaster relief and civil defense as counties’ role in this area continues to grow recourses, wetlands and energy conservation.

The committee is comprised of ACCG Staff Debra Nesbit; Chairman Bob Weatherford, Cobb County Commissioner; and Vice Chairman Bell.
