Artists Sought to Participate in T-Shirt Design Contest for 2019 Currahee Military Weekend

The Stephens County Historical Society is looking for a few good artists – or more – to enter their Currahee Military Weekend t-shirt design contest.

Military Museum Executive Director Brenda Carlin says they are looking for artwork for the special issue 2019 T-shirt design for Currahee Military Weekend.

“Over the years, we’ve tried to have some kind of World War II theme to go on the front of our t-shirts,” she explained. “This year is a very big year in Europe and the Pacific. It marks the 75th anniversary of four major campaigns. And we had four regiments here. So, what we want to do is acknowledge each of the regiments that served in those campaigns in 1944.”

Carlin said many people do not realize all of the battles those who trained at Camp Toccoa were involved in both in Europe and the Pacific.  That’s why she said they want the t-shirts to include those regiments and campaigns.

“Normandy everyone remembers, but Market Garden in September was one of the biggest and the first daytime jump. And of course the men that trained at Camp Toccoa were there. We had two regiments there, the 501st and the 506th that jumped in that as well. We also wanted to focus the attention on the 511th who went to the Pacific. They were involved in some major, major battles. That’s why this year it’s critical that we recognize all the men,” Carlin said.

Carlin says she’s looking forward to seeing the submissions from artists and hoping that many who have donated artwork in the past will take part in this contest.

“I’m very excited to see what we get because everybody as a different viewpoint. They have some options on what they can include in their artwork on the shirt. But not only do we want to have a nice t-shirt this year, but we want to keep the artwork and use it in years to come,” Carlin noted.

The header on the t-shirt should read, “75th Anniversary of the European and Pacific Campaigns 1944-

2019” with the names of the four battles underneath: “Normandy, Market Garden, Battle of Leyte (LAY-tee), and the Battle of Bastogne (BAST-own).

Carlin said the t-shirt could include the wording or logo for each of the regimental patches, the 506th “Currahee”, the 501st “Geronimo,” the 511th “Strength from Above,” and the 517th “Attack.”

Artwork must be between 10” x 10” and 11” x 11” in size, and be signed by the artist.  The artwork will be printed on the t-shirt in one color.

Carlin said creativity is encouraged.

Completed artwork must be submitted in .j peg form at via email before August 23rd.  Anyone with questions can call Carlin at the Military Museum at 706-282-5055 or email [email protected]
