Amnesty Day Deemed Huge Success

The Stephens County Commission praises Amnesty Day.

At last Tuesday’s Stephens County Commission meeting, Chairman Dennis Bell and Stephens County Administrator Phyllis Ayers sang the praises of the Stephens County Amnesty Day held in conjunction with Keep Toccoa-Stephens County Beautiful on April 25th. “A lot of people,” Says Ayers; “We started out with 8 employees. We realized early that we would never make it to 4 P.M. with just us. So we called in 8 more and it was non-stop until 4 P.M. We had to get additional bins.”

Amnesty Day gave Stephens County residents the chance to unload large household trash including mattresses, couches, metal products, and electronics, at the Stephens County Landfill on Highway 145, at no cost.

Bell was appreciative of those that took extra steps in cleaning up.”It blows my mind.” Says Bell, “Someone saw a mattress in the woods, stopped to pick it up and brought it. I was so pleased. If everyone would do just a little bit it would be so much easier. Thank you to all that helped.”

Stephens County’s Tim Mitchum told commissioners that approximately 40 tons of household and large items were collected in the 8 hours.

Keep Toccoa-Stephens County Beautiful volunteer Tim Hale helped throughout the day and said that he noticed lots of household trash brought in and wants to remind citizens of Stephens County that there are free opportunities. “We need to remind folks that there are no fees associated with throwing garbage in the compactors.”

Bell said that he would invite the opportunity for more Amnesty Days in Stephens County. “I’d love to see if not 4 times a year, at least twice.”

No word yet on when the next Stephens County Amnesty Day will be.
