Advance voting period nearing end

Early voting ends this Friday in Toccoa-Stephens County.

According to Stephens County Registrar Eureka Gober there has been 750 residents come in to cast early ballots since the beginning of the advance voting period, July 20.

She says early voting will run daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. until Friday, August 7, at the Stephens County Registrar’s Office, located inside the Stephens County Historical Courthouse.

Gober says the Registrar’s Office will continue to make use of the same preventative measures that were taken during the most recent election to combat the spread of COVID-19.

There are no local run-offs in Stephens County, but voters in Stephens County will be voting in the State House District 50 run-off between Republicans Bo Hatchett and Stacy Hall.

Voters will also be choosing candidates in both a Republican and Democratic run-off for the U.S. House of Representatives District 9 race to replace Congressman Doug Collins, who is running in the November election to fill the unexpired term of Senator Johnny Isakson who retired last December.

On the Republican side, voters will choose between Gainesville businessman Andrew Clyde and State Representative Matt Gurtler.

On the Democratic side, voters will decide between Brooke Siskin and Devin Pandy.

Gober says there has been some confusion at the Registrar’s Office with residents coming in to cast ballots for Doug Collins; however, she says Collins is not on this ballot, but he will be on the ballot in November.

Additionally, anyone who would like to vote by absentee ballot can request an application for one by calling the Registrar’s Office at 706-886-8954.

All absentee ballots are due back to the Registrar’s Office no later than 7 p.m., August 11.

Gober adds that the Board of Electors will begin early scanning and tabulation on August 7, at 10:00 a.m.

The Primary Runoff Election will be held on Tuesday, August 11, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. at the Stephens County Senior Center.
