Adults invited to take advantage of free Adult Education Courses at North Georgia Technical College

Adults who want to finish or get their GED can take advantage of free Adult Education Courses offered by North Georgia Technical College.

Adult Education Instructor Jackie Morgan works with students wanting to get their GED.

She says they offer a variety of courses for adult learners with a range of skills.

“We’ve got a program designed for people with different needs, different skill levels, different background levels. We provide a full-range of services for adults who want to improve their basic reading, math, and English skills and get a GED or to study for what they call the COMPASS exam, which is an exam to get into a technical college,” she said.

Morgan says there is no cost to take the course.

“The cost to attend—that the beautiful thing about the program, the cost is free. When you come to our classes, you come in and all of the services are free that we offer. Actually, taking the GED test, there are four components of the test, and each section is $40 per section. The test is paid for if you are in our program, you can receive a scholarship,” she said.

According to Morgan, students must by 17-years-old or 16-years-old with a parent’s consent.

“You have to be at least 16-years-old to sign up. A 16-year-old can sign up or a 17-year-old can sign-up, but they have to have a withdrawal slip from the last school they attended, and they do have to have a parent or guardian come with them. As far as age limit there is no age limit we take any student all ages,” she said.

Morgan says they accept students into the adult education program throughout the year.

“The Adult Education Program is year-round. We have registration usually twice a month. Anyone can call us at 706-779-8116. They can come in at any time, and we take students at any time during the year,” she said.

She adds that they offer Adult Education classes on multiple campuses and at several locations off campus, including the Currahee Campus in Stephens County and the Hope Center, located on Whitman Street.

“We have the campus located on Hwy 17, which is the Currahee Campus, we have adult education classes here mornings from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. We also have The Hope Center, located in downtown Toccoa, and we have a Franklin County center located at the Franklin County Board of Education where we offer services as well,” she said.
